The Algonquin and Secatogue Indians originally inhabited the entire area that now encompasses the Town of Islip. In 1683, William Nicoll purchased the land now known as Sachem from Chief Winnequaheagh of Connetquot. He named his plantation Islip Grange, in honor of the town where he came from in England, which was called Islip. More land purchases were eventually made of the surrounding regions by several different men including Andrew Gibb, Stephanis Van Cortlandt, John Mowbray, Richard Willets and Thomas Willets. Eventually, all of these areas joined together to form the town of Islip.
