The town of Brookhaven is the only town in Suffolk County, New York that stretches from the north to south shore, with access points to both the Long Island Sound and the Great South Bay. Nine villages and fifty unincorporated hamlets make up the Long Island Town of Brookhaven. The first inhabitants of the Town of Brookhaven were Setauket and Unkechaug tribes. The Unkechaug tribe maintain the Poospatuck Reservation on Long Island’s North Fork. English settlers arrived in the area in 1640 and fifteen years later purchased the lands that compromise Brookhaven from the Native Americans living in the area. The English named their first settlement Setauket, after the Native American people who lived there. The population of Brookhaven doubted between 1825 and the end of the Civil War.
